HALLMARK SECURITY LEAGUE
FIRST DIVISION NORTH
HOLKER OLD BOYS 0 AFC DARWEN 3
Despite a shortage of first team squad members available, especially in defence, Darwen came away from Holker with a good victory and clean sheet. Aspen Feathers made his debut today and Luke Jarrold returned after playing fifteen games for the club last season.
Darwen played downhill in the first half, and after twelve minutes Danny Taylor burst through the Holker defence, only to be brought down in the penalty area. Elliot Pond sent the keeper the wrong way with the spot kick.
Two minutes later, a free kick for Holker near the corner flag caused problems in the Darwen defence with the ball being squirmed clear, but the home side retrieved the ball and a Holker forward was tripped in the box resulting in the referee pointing to the spot again. Bradley Hubbold took the penalty kick but hit the post.
At the other end, Elliot Pond worked his way to the edge of the box and his effort beat Sam Stephens in goal with the ball going just wide of the upright, but on twenty minutes, the Darwen doubled their lead. A clearance upfield by Kallum Banks was helped onto Jamie Edwards, who made his way to the edge of the box and set up Leon Creech, who avoided a tackle to stroke the ball home.
The visitors came so close to a third on twenty six minutes when Creech rushed down the right wing to pull a cross back to the edge of the area where Edwards came steaming in, only to the smash the ball against the crossbar. Five minutes later, another good chance as Jamie Edwards won the ball in midfield to put Elliot Pond clean through. The striker tried to round keeper Stephens, but the Holker Captain made a great block to keep his side in the game.
The home side had created few chances but with ten minutes to go, an effort by Bradley Hubbold beat the Darwen keeper but went wide of the post
Half Time: Holker Old Boys 0 AFC Darwen 2
The second half saw Holker come more into the match as Darwen sat on their lead, but the visitor’s defence and Jordan Gidley in goal dealt fairly comfortably with most threats.
As the game neared the end, the home side were pushing up to such a degree that holes started to appear in their defence. With two minutes of normal time to go, a Holker corner was cleared upfield by Matt Farnworth to Danny Taylor, leaving defenders in his wake, and his cross into the box was headed home by substitute Aspen Feathers, who capped his first appearance with a goal.
