HALLMARK SECURITY LEAGUE
FIRST DIVISION NORTH
NELSON 1 AFC DARWEN 1
After a first half edged by Nelson, Darwen came strongly into the game as it progressed, but despite creating multiple chances, failed to add to their early second half goal. Leon Creech made his debut for the side tonight.
Nelson had the first shot on target when Jake Lloyd broke through only to strike the ball too close to Darwen keeper Ryan Tweddle who parried the drive. On ten minutes, a head on by Yahya Saeed found Danny Taylor who put Karl Turner clear, but shot was too near keeper Marcel Wsiewicz, who could then pushed the ball away. Four minutes later Wsiewicz was called into action again as he saved a Taylor effort with his feet.
On twenty one minutes Saeed headed on for Danny Taylor to burst through the Nelson defence. His blast from outside the box just cleared the bar. Five minutes later, Wsiewicz made another good stop from Saeed.
The home side started to exert pressure on the Darwen defence and opened the scoring with ten minutes of the half to go. Several goal attempts were repelled but a pass then found Wayne Morrison, who swivelled to blast the ball in.
Half Time: Nelson 1 AFC Darwen 0
Two minutes into the restart Darwen were level. Danny Taylor sped down the wing, and his low cross was helped on to the cross bar. It skimmed back into play at the far post where Matt Cain was well placed to hammer the ball home.
A minute later, a corner from the right went to the far post where a Darwen foot made contact with the ball looking close to crossing the line before Wsiewicz scooped it away.
On the seventieth minute Danny Taylor’s speed took him clear of the Nelson defence but he fired wide with only the keeper to beat. Four minutes later Taylor was in the right place to connect with a cross from Elliot Pond but his effort ballooned over the bar. The roles were then reversed as Pond put a Danny Taylor cross over the bar.
The visitors had dominated most of the second half, with sporadic attacks from Nelson, but couldn’t find the back of the net again. The final effort fell to Darwen’s goal scorer Matt Cain, whose attempt from over thirty yards out whistled over the bar.
