THE BUILDBASE FA VASE
2ND QUALIFYING ROUND
15/9/2018
AFC DARWEN 1 GARSTANG 2
Garstang headed to AFC Darwen to play their first ever game in the FA Vase
Garstang had an early opportunity when Roberts made space for Nagy who crossed to Akrigg and he was just unable to get his foot round the ball striking it wide of the target. At the other end Taylor fired just wide before Ross, having found space in the box, headed an Akrigg corner well wide.
Swindlehurst had his hands full dealing with Ellis the tricky Darwen winger but stuck to his task well to keep him quiet. Darwen had the ball in the net on 13 minutes but it was disallowed as the ball had gone over the byline before being crossed in.
The visitors went ahead a minute later when Roberts got clear on the left side of the box and rolled the ball to Salisbury who had the simplest of finishes. Darwen striker Taylor let his frustration show and picked up a yellow for dissent as Garstang took control of the game.
On 24 minutes Nagy drove a pass out to Salisbury on the right wing who cut inside two defenders before planting a left footer into the back of the net for his second goal of the game. At this point The Riversiders were well on top and with Roberts causing his marker all sorts of trouble they had a number of chances to increase their lead but at half time the score remained 0-2.
Half Time: AFC Darwen 0 Garstang 2
The second half began with a set back when a speculative shot came back of the post and Creech was on hand to pop in the rebound. This gave The Salmoners some encouragement but it could have been 3-1 two minutes later when Sailor drove from his own half to the edge of the Darwen box only to be denied by keeper Gidley’s legs.
The home side were seeing more of the ball but it was Garstang who had the better chances with some sparkling counter attacking but they were unable to put the game to bed. The home side kept pushing forward but Ric Coar continued to win every header, Graham was looking full of running as he broke up play in the midfield and the only real chance Darwen had was a looping shot which Kitchen did well to tip over.
After a nail-biting 6 minutes of added time the referee finally blew the whistle on a little bit of Garstang FC history as they booked their place in the 1st Round proper of the FA Vase
