FIRST DIVISION NORTH

AFC DARWEN 2 GARSTANG 1

Darwen gained their first home league points of the season with a narrow win over Garstang. Matt Farnworth was making his debut for the club.

Garstang were the first on target in the third minute when Ben Roberts broke free to fire at James Whittingham, who was returning after injury. The Darwen keeper made a good block to keep the ball out.

The home side took the lead in the eighteenth minute. A move down the wing stretched Garstang. Danny Taylor raced away and his low cross into the box found Elliot Pond to score his first goal for Darwen.

Garstang had the ball in the net on twenty nine minutes with a goal being ruled out for offside, but did equalise a minute later when two forwards broke through, with Darwen appealing for offside. Whittingham initially made two great saves from each player, but couldn’t stop the third effort from Alan Coar going over the line. With ten minutes to go, Ben Roberts curled a free kick round the Darwen wall but just past the post.

Half Time: AFC Darwen 1 Garstang 1

Three minutes into the restart, a Darwen attack broke down, and the ball went up the other end, forcing James Whittingham to stop two efforts on target from Garstang. Two minutes later a Darwen free kick into the penalty area caused some panic before visiting keeper Will Kitchen grasped the loose ball.

With ten minutes to go Darwen retook the lead. Matt Farnworth struck a shot from outside the box which beat Kitchen but ricocheted off the post. Danny Taylor was in the right position to hammer the rebound home.

Five minutes later, Roberts created a chance as he cut inside a defender but fired straight at Whittingham from the edge of the box. Darwen then came close when Yahya Saeed won the header to put Leon Creech through. His ball found Corey Harrison, whose drive looked goal bound until Kitchen made a great save to punch the shot away for a corner. Harrison was through again with a minute to go but was unfortunate to see Kitchen get in the way with the ball rebounding of the Darwen forward for a goal kick.
