HALLMARK SECURITY LEAGUE
FIRST DIVISION NORTH
AFC DARWEN 1 AVRO 4
Tonight’s match was very even for three quarters of the game although Darwen were down to ten men after thirty five minutes, but after losing central defender Martin Parker early and full back Kieran Wood on the hour mark, the home side struggled in defence and conceded three goals in the last fifteen minutes. Jon Fraser was making his debut for Darwen.
Supporters were still taking their seats as Darwen scored what must be one of the fastest goals of the season so far. As the home side kicked off, Danny Taylor passed through to Yahya Saeed. He outpaced the defence to fire past Jordan Latham in goal.
Avro were level a few minutes later when Jake Pollard raced into the box and was tripped by Martin Parker. Mike Norton put the penalty away. Parker was injured in trying to prevent the goal and was replaced by Karl Turner.
On eighteen minutes Latham made a sliding save to deny Yahya Saeed, and the ball went swiftly up to the other end where Kane Wallwork fired wide. As the half hour approached, Latham made a great save to deny Danny Taylor and Liam Cole’s follow up was cleared off the line by a defender.
A major incident occurred past the half hour. Avro’s Mike Norton raced through and was stopped by Sam Knowles and the out rushing Josh Cosgrove. After several minutes treatment Cosgrove had to be taken off and was replaced by in goal by James Brindle. Knowles was red carded for the tackle, presumably denying a goal scoring opportunity.
With four minutes of the half to go, Avro’s Sam Rathbone got his head to a free kick but put the ball wide with the goal gaping. From the goal kick the ball was laid on for Danny Taylor who brushed past the Avro defence and into the box where he was tripped. He took the resulting penalty but Jordan Latham made a good save to his left to push the ball away. From the resulting corner Adam Heaney got his head to the ball which went just wide.
In injury time Kieran Wood made a great tackle to deny Duncan Knott who had broken through the Darwen defence.
Half Time: AFC Darwen 1 Avro 1
It was all action at the restart as James Brindle denied a goal to Avro with a block at the foot of the post, and then Danny Taylor broke through the visitor defence, but with only the keeper to beat, shot straight at him. Ten minutes in Kane Wallwork fired wide of the Darwen post from outside the box. In another attack Jake Pollard was clear and chipped the Darwen keeper with the ball sailing over the bar. In the seventieth minute Adam Heaney missed a chance as his effort went wide from a Jon Fraser cross. A Karl Turner free kick then cleared the defensive wall but went the wrong side of the post
With fifteen minutes to go Avro took the lead when a ball to the far post was stopped but pinged over to the near post where Joe Rathbone tapped in.
Into the last ten minutes and the visitors made it three when Mike Norton latched on to a free kick clear of the Darwen defence and crossed for Rathbone to score his second.
With a minute to go James Brindle made a great save from Louis Potts to push the ball away for a corner. The resulting corner was lofted to the far post where Vincent Howell fired home. In injury time Mike Norton headed wide when in front of goal.
