HALLMARK SECURITY LEAGUE
AFC DARWEN 0 IRLAM 4
Darwen’s final game of the season ended in another home defeat, leaving the side at the bottom of the Hallmark Security League Premier Division.
An eighth minute free kick by Ryan Steele drifted just wide of the post. The first shot on target five minutes later was from Darwen as a cross was headed towards goal by Kieran Wood with Lee White making a great save in the Irlam goal to tip the ball away for a corner. After stopping Connor Martin’s dribble in the Darwen box, the ball went to the other end where White saved at the second attempt from Ryan McKenna.
As the game approached twenty minutes, a cross from the right was driven home by Martin to put the visitors ahead.
Four minutes later Irlam went two up as Haydn Foulds converted a low cross in off the post. Four minutes on, Foulds broke through but his attempted chip over Tom Scott wasn’t high enough and the keeper caught it.
Darwen came close with five minutes of the half to go, when a cross found Ryan McKenna in the box, with his header beating the Irlam keeper but crashing against the bar.
Half Time: AFC Darwen 0 Irlam 2
Irlam went three up five minutes into the restart. A defensive error let in Connor Martin. His shot was cleared off the line by Kieran Wood but Martin recovered the ball to fire home.
Ryan McKenna broke through the visitor defence on the hour. Keeper White just got fingers to his effort and the ball was cleared just before Jamie Edwards could put in the follow up. Five minutes later, Irlam’s Karl Cassell just cleared the crossbar from thirty yards out, followed by Foulds, who strode through Darwen’s static defence but fired over with an open goal looming.
With under twenty minutes to go, defensive errors again let Foulds through, but this time he rounded the keeper to stroke the ball home. With ten minutes left, Tom Scott came out to narrow the angle of Connor Martin who was through on goal. The forward passed the ball to Haydn Foulds, who headed over from a few yards out. In the dying minutes Irlam’s Orrell was let through but ballooned his effort over the bar
