AFC DARWEN 0 NORTHWICH VICTORIA 5

Defensive errors by Darwen gifted Northwich Victoria most of the goals in this match as the home side conceded four goals in the first half hour. Luke Tabone was making his home debut for the club

The visitors had the first shot on target as James Whittingham managed to push away a strong drive from new Northwich signing George Hassall, but they were ahead on sixteen minutes when Tim Drugan put the ball across his own box and into the feet of Hassall, who fired home.

Two minutes later, the visitors were two up as Hassall picked up on a deflection from a corner to volley past Whittingham.

Darwen’s first shot on target after twenty minutes forced Michael Donlon in the Northwich goal to make a great diving save to push away a Ryan Steele free kick for a corner. After a period of home pressure, a goal kick upfield led to Hassall getting through the Darwen defence, and despite his goal effort being deflected by James Whittingham, the ball ran to Brian Matthews for a tap in with the defence absent.

The visitors were four up before the half hour when a ball from the left was not cleared properly by Darwen defenders and Matthews took the opportunity to pick up the loose ball and grab his second. Ten minutes later Donlon made another good parry from a Jamie Edwards drive.

Four minutes into the restart, Donlon made another good stop as he got fingertips to a Bobby Langford low drive. Perhaps Northwich had taken their foot off the pedal for the second half, but Darwen had the best of the play with some good moves to test the away defence, but another blunder cost another goal.

With twenty minutes to go, the ball was passed back to keeper James Whittingham, who ran the ball along his area but delayed his clearance, and as he tried to boot upfield, Matthews stuck a foot out and the ball rebounded off his boot and into the net.

With Darwen trying to get something from the game, Northwich exploited the odd gap, with one shot smashing against the bar. At the other end Kieran Wood hit a curling drive from twenty five yards out with Donlon tipping the effort round the post.
