HALLMARK SECURITY LEAGUE

PREMIER DIVISION

27/9/2017

AFC DARWEN 0 RUNCORN LINNETS 1

Despite the conditions on a wet and windy night, both teams provided a good game of football with Runcorn Linnets, currently in second place in the league, edging out Darwen, who played most of the second half with ten men.

The first real action happened after the first quarter when Runcorn broke through forcing Darwen keeper Macauley Scott to make two great saves in quick succession. Five minutes later he had to use both hands to push away another drive.

On twenty four minutes a Darwen attack broke down and Runcorn put a series of quick moves together which resulted in a pass from the right finding Mitchell Bryant unmarked in the middle of the Darwen box. He had the simple task of tapping in. Confusion arose as the officials considered offside, but after consultation, referee Conor Brown gave the goal.

Ten minutes later, Macauley Scott managed to save a shot from the edge of the box with his feet, and as the first half ended the home side had created very little threat on the Linnets goal.

Darwen came out for the second half in a more determined move, but were dealt a blow when Gary Brown received a second yellow card for a foul, reducing the home side to ten.

But the Salmoners went on the attack, with a Matt Allen header just clearing the bar. A free kick into the visitor’s penalty area saw a Lee Turner header whistle by the post. With less than ten minutes to go Seydou Bamba was another player to watch his header sail over the bar.

Darwen were the better team as the half progressed and the weather deteriorated. They played like they had a full team on the field, but just could not get the breakthrough that their efforts deserved.
