WINSFORD UNITED 2 AFC DARWEN 0

Darwen put in a good performance here at Winsford today, had most of the ball and chances, but came away with nothing. Due to absences and injuries, several members of the Development squad, Macauley Scott, Sidi Fofana, and Luke Cassidy were making their debuts for the first team. Ryan McKenna was also back in the starting line-up for the first time this season.

Darwen came close to scoring in the first minute and Winsford keeper Michael Langley had to make a great block with his legs to prevent a goal. He was injured in the process and play was held up for several minutes as he was treated.

Against the run of play, a ball was launched into the Salmoner’s penalty box and struck a Darwen defender on the arm. You have seen a penalty given or play waved on for this sort of incident, but unluckily for Darwen it was the former, with the spot kick being despatched by Callum Gardner.

The visitors came close again on the first quarter when a poor kick out by Langley was gathered by Jordan Scott. His effort was punched away by Langley, but Scott recovered and slid the ball across the goal line, withthe ball taken off the foot of Ryan Steele by a defender.

A quickly taken Winsford free kick set Scott Taylor up but he saw his poor connection sail wide. On twenty seven minutes, a ball over the top put Danny Banks through, and he was clattered just outside the box by Sean Sherwood. Could have been a red card but referee Daniel Issawi showed him yellow. Ryan Steele’s free kick hit the ball, and Kiel Lonsdale returned a strong shot which Langley retrieved at the second attempt. Another Steele free kick three minutes later hit the wall again.

With ten minutes to go, Winsford keeper and defender dithered as who should clear a through ball. Langley was well out of his area when he booted the ball away, which was gathered by Danny Banks, and the midfielder’s return looped over the keeper’s head as he scrambled to get back, but unluckily rebounded off the post.

In the last minute of normal time, Kiel Lonsdale thundered a shot towards goal from a Ryan McKenna pass, with Langley somehow getting in the way to prevent the equaliser. In injury time a ball into the Winsford box was headed on by McKenna to Lonsdale, whose effort was tipped over the bar by ultimate Winsford man of the match Michael Langley.

Half Time: Winsford United 1 AFC Darwen 0

The visitors carried on where they had left off before the break, with play being mostly in the Winsford half, but on the hour mark the ball was booted clear with James Rothwell in the right place at the right time as he found himself in the clear to push the ball across Darwen keeper Macauley Scott and into the opposite corner of the net, despite Jordan Scott’s effort to keep it out.

Darwen’s best chance came with twenty five minutes to go. Another attack was broken up but the ball was retrieved in midfield by Adam Douglas. He made progress then slipped a pass to Ryan McKenna who was behind the defence with only Langley in goal to beat. As the keeper advanced, the Darwen striker lifted the ball over his head but also over the bar. Winsford sub Danny Hudson had two chances five minutes later, the first being gathered by Macauley Scott and the second ballooning over the bar.

In the last quarter, Mark McKay’s shot on the turn went the wrong side of the post. In the last minute Alex Ralph put in a great run down the wing, evading defenders, cut into the box and tried to beat Langley by the near post but his drive went into the side netting.
