PREMIER DIVISION

AFC DARWEN 0 ASHTON ATHLETIC 4

Darwen created no chances of note in this game, and only some brave keeping by James Whittingham kept the score down towards the end. Seydou Bamba and Patrick Fury made their debuts for the club.

Darwen’s keeper got injured in the ninth minute whilst blocking a shot away for a corner and play was held up for several minutes as his damaged leg was attended to. The corner was subsequently taken and Whittingham, despite hobbling, managed to push the ball out, but it fell to Joel Brownhill at the edge of the box to drill it back through a ruck of players into the net.

Two minutes later the same player made it two for Ashton as he hit a great volley from one edge of the box into the opposite corner of the Darwen net giving Whittingham no chance.

The visitors made it three on the hour when Dale Torie-Butler shrugged off defender Seydou Bamba near the corner flag, and then cut back into the box to tuck the ball into the far corner.

Half Time: AFC Darwen 0 Ashton Athletic 3

The second half started quietly and it was twenty minutes before an Ashton free kick from halfway inside Darwen territory was headed onto the post. Even minutes later a fall was slid along the Darwen goal line from near the corner flag. An Ashton foot got to the ball but the effort went wide.

Heading towards the last quarter of the game, the visitors scored their fourth goal. Substitute Sam Bailey received the ball some twenty five yards from goal and decided to have a shot. The ball kept low and passed by several players and under James Whittingham’s body into the net.

Five minutes later Daniel Regan was put through and looked certain to score but Whittingham put his body in the way to deflect the ball. Five minutes later the visitors hit the post again from a corner. Then the keeper had to rush from goal to block another Ashton goal threat. A well hit drive from Bailey was pushed onto the post by Whittingham, and he followed this by getting two hand to a Daniel Regan strike to push the ball over the bar.
