HALLMARK SECURITY LEAGUE

PREMIER DIVISION

14/3/2017

ABBEY HEY 1 AFC DARWEN 3

Despite the slightly bumpy pitch, Darwen produced a good passing performance, and were unfortunate not to take all three points against their mid table opposition.

Bobby Langford and Conor Gaul were available for this game, which also marked Kiel Lonsdale’s two hundreth competitive appearance for the club.

Abbey Hey had a chance in the fourth minute as a shot by Jonathon Hardy drifted past the post, but after twenty minutes of no significant action, the home side took the lead when a great strike by Jack Tinning from the edge of the box finished high into the corner of the net, giving Darwen keeper Ben Proctor no chance.

Darwen’s first good attempt didn’t arrive until ten minutes before the break when a twenty five yard drive by Alex Ralph was turned round the corner by Elliot Wynne in the home goal.

Half Time: Abbey Hey 1 AFC Darwen 0

Darwen started the second half well with Mohammed Nabeel’s effort rebounding to Declan Cunliffe, whose curling shot was scrambled away by Wynne. Abbey forward Ashford Blake ran onto a through ball a minute later, lifted the ball over Proctor, but well wide of the post. Ten minutes later Wynne again managed to turn a Conor Gaul free kick round the post.

Darwen were constantly pressing the home defence and got their reward with twenty minutes to go. A through ball was latched on to by Conor Gaul. Outpacing the defence, he rounded the keeper and slotted home.

Although Darwen dominated second half possession, Abbey Hey were dangerous from time to time, and with five minutes to go a ball to the far post was headed just wide.

The last chance fell to Darwen in injury time. Declan Cunliffe saw an effort blocked, and he gathered the rebound but fired wide of the post.
