Match Report

HALLMARK SECURITY LEAGUE

PREMIER DIVISION

22/4/2017

AFC DARWEN 1 1874 NORTHWICH 3

Even though Darwen lost this game today, they remain in the premier League as New Mills failed to win and will join Nelson and Cammell Laird in the First Division next season. Karl Turner played his 250th competitive game for AFC Darwen, was captain for the day, and was picked as Darwen’s man of the match by the opposition. A great day for Karl (apart from the result!)

Darwen keeper Ben Proctor was in action within two minutes as he came out of goal to claim the ball to halt a visitor attack. 1874 slowly started to make inroads with Proctor having to make saves, as well as the ball skimming the bar.

On the half hour the visitors had a succession of corners, all cleared by the Darwen defence, but eight minutes later, interplay from Edwards, Nabeeel, and Turner nearly ends in a Darwen goal.

With five minutes to go it was Nick Hepple who broke the deadlock with his sixth goal in the last four games. Karl Turner crossed from the right and found the striker at the far post. Despite getting a hand on the ball, 1874 keeper Hall was unable to prevent Hepple from opening the scoring from close range. 1874’s Tom Bailey struck the bar three minutes later.

The visitors started sharply in the second half and Darwen were on the back foot, relying on the counter. But the pressure told on the hour as Scott McGowan ran onto a through ball to slot past Proctor to square the match.

The play became end to end as Nick Hepple and then Liam Cole fired just wide, with 1874’s Jack Russell heading over the bar. Darwen’s cause wasn’t helped when they were reduced to ten men when Nick Hepple picked up his second yellow card with twenty minutes left.

The visitors took the lead with fifteen minutes to go as Whitlock swooped on to a loose ball in the Darwen box to fire home, and two minutes later Matt Woolley sealed it for 1874 Northwich by edging a free kick past Ben Proctor.
