Ashton Athletic put 4 past Darwen.
After a 2 – 0 win over Barnton Darwen were looking to continue momentum into the game against Ashton Athletic, a team who found themselves in the dead centre of the table.
As always the game started fast and after less than a minute Darwen produced the first shot of the game, after a positive and quick move forward ended with 8 volleying high over the goal, positives signs from Darwen.
This was until the 6th minute when a low cross from the left hand side of the goal was palmed away by the Darwen keeper but only into the path of several Ashton men, legs went flying as both Darwen defenders and Ashton attackers flung themselves at the ball, but a deflection caused the ball to land at the feat of the quick Ashton striker who put the ball into the open net. 1 – 0 Ashton
For the next 30 minutes Darwen were on showing a good threat towards goal. Also Darwen managed to carve out two great chances, the first in the 21st minute when Ryan Gaul went through on the left of the goal, cut inside with a fake shot passed a defender and his left footed shot across goal deflected off the bar and out for a goal kick. The second was in the 36th minute when good play from Darwen was halted by a foul but advantage was played and the ball was shot from range, but it was never bothering the keeper.
In the 42nd minute Ashton almost doubled their lead when the first goal scorer took on a volley from long range which dipped, but not enough and so the shot went just over.
Then in last 2 minutes of the half Ashton extended their lead…twice. The first a great cross from the right was missed by all Darwen defenders and fell to the feet of an Ashton midfielder who finished well first time into a relatively open goal. The second and their third came a minute later when Ashton were awarded a freekick on the edge of the area. And the freekick taker smartly put the ball under the wall and into the bottom corner of the goal so at the break Darwen had a mountain to climb with the score at 3 – 0 to Ashton.
Darwen had a lot of ground to catch if they had any hope of salvaging anything from this game but the half started promisingly when 6 minutes in a corner met the head of Gaul at the near post and looked to be heading into the top corner, but the keeper was in the right place at the right time and palmed the ball wide.
Minutes later Darwen should have scored when Bobby Langford went through on goal but his shot went wide left of the goal, should have done better.
Then in the 69th minute a mistake was the finishing blow for Darwen then a lacklustre back pass by a Darwen defender came straight to a Ashton striker who only had the keeper to beat and he made no mistake and finished the game for Darwen 4 – 0
Darwen defiantly improved in the second half and were arguably the better team with the more chances but they couldn’t make anything of them, the game could have gone a very different way had Aston not scored so early on. And so the game ended 4 – 0 to Ashton Athletic.
