AFC Darwen Reserves win again

AFC Darwen Reserves 1-0 Ashtonians

AFC Darwen Reserves won their second match of the season when they deservedly defeated Ashtonians at the WEC Anchor Ground, this was revenge for a 4-1 defeat against the same opposition two weeks ago, the scoreline flatters the visitors as Darwen dominated nearly all the game and really should have had more goals to show for their efforts. Manager Simon Littler welcomed long term injuries Joshua Senior and Norton Johnston back into the squad for their first games since August,

Darwen dominated all the early play and could have been at least two goals ahead in the first eleven minutes. Firstly in the second minute a headed chance went wide, then Josh Senior was played through but he shot wide when really he should have scored. In the eighth minute a Darwen free kick just outside the area was fired wide, the Josh Senior had another effort which again missed the target. Little was seen of the visitors as an attacking force as Darwen continued to press forward, with Josh Senior proving to be a handful for the visitors defence, but for all their domination they were unable to create any clear cut chances. The visitors had their first shot at goal in the 29th minute but this was easily saved by Josh Cosgrove. Four minutes later another effort by the visitors went well wide. Darwen continued to press forward and five minutes from the break another Darwen effort missed the target when it sailed over the bar. Almost immediately another chance came but the visitors keeper easily save a headed effort. Ashtonians then had their best effort of the half when Josh Cosgrove had to produce a diving save to keep the scores level. The half ended with another Darwen effort which went wide to leave the teams level at 0-0 at half time.

Ashtonians then had their best spell of the game just after half time and only a brave save by Josh Cosgrove at the feet of a visitors forward stopped them from taking the lead. Darwen then re asserted themselves on the game and Jack Beech drove through the visitors defence but his effort only found the side netting. In the fifty eigth minute Darwen should have taken the lead but Cameron Austin with a free header could only place his effort over the bar. Scott Walsh then had an effort but this went just wide of the far post. In a rare attack the visitors had a chance but this also missed the target as it sailed over the bar. In the sixty seventh minute Darwen had another effort saved but they won the ball back and when a shot from Jacob Sauverin was palmed out by the visitors keeper and Scott Walsh was on hand to slot the ball home. The visitors were making little impression in attack as Darwen ended the game well on top but despite having more attempts on goal they were unable to add to their lead.
