AFC Darwen Reserves 1-2 Bolton Wyresdale Wednesday

22nd August 2018 ko 6.30 pm

AFC Darwen Reserves lost their second match of the season when they went down to a narrow defeat against a decent Bolton Wyresdale outfit. Darwen’s squad showed seven changes from last Saturday’s team but despite this they competed well throughout the ninety minutes and were unlucky not to get something out of the game.

All the early play was in midfield with both sides playing some attractive football, the deadlock was broken in the 12th minute when Wyresdale took the lead through Joe Raynor who was on hand to slot the ball home after Darwen’s defence had failed to deal with a through ball. Two minutes later Darwen had the chance to equalise but they failed to find the back of the net with a headed chance. Chances for both sides were few but Darwen had another chance to score in the 25th minute but a header from Fenton Brown was deflected over the bar. Play almost immediately switched to the other end and a chance for Bolton went begging when they shot wide. Darwen finished the half strongly but two further chances went begging, firstly a flick on by Tomas Fox put a Darwen player clear but he flicked the ball into the keeper’s arms and on the stroke of half time a shot from Tomas Fox was parried away by the Wyresdale keeper. This left the half time score at 1-0 to the visitors.

The start of the second half followed the same pattern but the visitors increased their lead in the 50th minute with a goal from Alex Buchannon after the Darwen keeper had palmed an effort on to the post. Darwen were back in the game two minutes later with a goal from Tomas Fox who hammered home a loose ball after a free kick. Wyresdale had a chance to increase their lead but from a free kick the chance was headed over the crossbar, almost immediately another chance came their way but this time the post saved Darwen from going further behind. Darwen strived hard for the equaliser but despite creating a couple chances they were unable to test the Wyresdale keeper to leave the visitors with a narrow victory.
