Accrington Amateurs 4-2 AFC Darwen Reserves
18th August 2018
In their first competitive game in the Lancashire Amateur League AFC Darwen Reserves must be wondering how they managed to lose a game which they controlled for the most part, unfortunately a mixture of missed chances and poor defending cost them the match.
The first chance of the game fell to Accrington in the 2nd minute but they failed to convert, Darwen replied but had a goal disallowed in the 5th minute for offside. The home side took the lead in the 8th minute with a goal from Billy Ratcliffe who cut inside a defender and fired home. Darwen were having most of the possession but were failing to create too many chances, the one that did fall their way in 18th minute was not taken. Two minutes later desperate defending from Darwen saw them clear off their own line, however the equaliser came in the 23rd minute with a header from Norton Johnston. From the kick off Darwen regained possession and an Adam Monk piledriver cannoned back off the crossbar. For the rest of the half Darwen continued to dominate but failed to convert a number of chances that came their way to leave the half time score at 1-1.
The second half started in the same vein with Darwen much the better side, but Accrington had the first chance which brought a good save from Jake Cooper. Accrington went ahead in the 55th minute when a poor goal kick was picked by the home side and Tom Baynes made no mistake. Darwen continued to press and another chance soon went begging. They were back level in the 65th minute, the home keeper pulled off a double barreled save and from the resulting corned Fenton Brown swept the ball home. This was the best it got for Darwen as the home side added two further goals in the last five minutes to give them victory. There was still time in the 90th minute for Darwen to rattle the bar again and were unable to put the rebound away.
