We knew it was going to be tough at Atherton for a start. We had played five or six games previously in a short period of tine, and when you go to a team chasing the title, plus we had several players carrying injuries, we knew it was going to be hard.

We gave some sloppy goals away, two penalties and an own goal, but at the end of the day we played a good side
and knew that this game wouldn’t define our season. Wednesday’s game against Squires Gate would be the crucial game, so we rested players with niggles.

We decided to start the game against Squires Gate narrow and fill up the midfield, which didn’t play to our strengths, more to theirs, although they didn’t cause us many problems in the first half. We were doing enough to stay in the game but not win it.

We made a decision at half time to widen the play with Codge and Ralphy on the wings, play man to man in midfield and push up as a back four. This meant that our front players were given a chance to run at their defenders and cause problems, which was what happened. We kept the ball on the floor and played one touch two touch.

We had some dangerous players in the team, plus when you have a goal scorer like Nick in the front line it makes a difference. It was a massive game and with them being one point above us before play, and us having a game in hand we were over the moon with our second half performance.
